The origin of the Nausicaans is hotly debated, even among the Nausicaans and their few scientists. Five common theories have been put forward with various degrees of correlating data. No one theory seems to have the confirmation based on all data, however. Without a Nausicaan from the original homeworld- wherever it may be- and an evolutionary timeline with proto-Nausicaan ancestors. That may never happen.

One of the more fringe theories is that the Nausicaans that have been on Nausicaa may have been altered by the environment itself- virus mutation, symbiosis with native microbes or perhaps some kind of genetic mutation by the early transplanted Nausicaans that survived that allowed them to thrive on the planet.
