At a Glance

One of the most important distinctions to make is that Federation Intelligence is not Starfleet Intelligence or Section 31. While both bodies have similar roles, their focuses are completely different. Starfleet Intelligence focuses on external threats to the United Federation of Planets. Federation Intelligence focuses on internal threats to the same body. The two branches do occasionally cross paths and share data, particularly when a potential threat crosses into the other's territory. When a threat becomes externalized, Starfleet Intelligence takes the upper hand. Until that time, localized threats that come across Starfleet Intelligence's desk are referred to the Federation Intelligence Bureau.
