END OF BRIEFING

At a Glance

The Krowtonan Guard remains a mystery to Federation diplomacy. What is known is that they are vehemently territorial and will respond to the violation of their sovereignty with an overwhelming military response. They do not seem to communicate often with outsiders, suggesting that the Krowtonan Guard are xenophobic- or at least isolationist. Given that the bulk of their neighbors are aggressive military expansionists (or population harvesting ghouls), it could be interpreted that the Krowtonan simply see no benefit to opening themselves up to outsiders.

Territory

Krowtonan Guard space is roughly twenty-five percent larger than Cardassian Union territory, with similar ubiquitousness in military outposts, listening posts, and garrisons stationed on its borders- especially with the Vidiian Sodality on their Coreward border, as well as their Antispinward border- however, they do not share a border with any Kazon. The robust military presence may be a pre-emptive buffer. A "neutral zone" seems to exist between the Krowtonan Guard's Rimward border, and the Haakonian Order's Coreward border. Ships of both types seem to avoid the area.

T'ban String Cluster

The Coreward-Spinward border of the Krowtonan-Haakonian Neutral Zone appears to be complicated by a large spatial phenomenon- an ultradense stellar nursery cluster. The T'ban String Cluster, so named because of the strange strings of forming protostars among twists of gravitationally "rutted" dust and gas, is thirty-six light-years across. Both powers seem to avoid the area and with good reason- the String Cluster is gravitationally hazardous, with a lot of electromagnetic and plasma interference. The protostars within charge the dust in the "strings" with ions, and the results are intense plasma storms similar to the Denorios Belt's Badlands near Bajor.

Vidiian Sodality Border

The expansive border with the Vidiian Sodality has all the hallmarks of a highly militarized, defensive posture for a civilization at war with its neighbor. The border is lined with outposts and listening stations as well as automated weapon platforms and minefields. The Krowtonan Guard's policy on Vidiian incursions into their space seems to be one of, "Shoot first, shoot last, ask no questions after. Long-range sensors have detected Vidiian vessels in distress being destroyed once the vessel crossed the border into Krowtonan Guard space. The Krowtonan Guard along this border does not answer hails, and interdicts and destroys any vessel regardless of origin here. This suggests a high level of paranoia of assumed trickery on the part of the Vidiians.

Diplomatic Relations

The United Federation of Planets

To date, the most hostile exchange between the Krowtonan Guard and the United Federation of Planets has been the early-2371 encounter with the Federation starship Equinox. And though the Equinox suffered heavy damage and the loss of almost half the crew in the territorial violation, the Krowtonans attempted to warn these strangers away from their territory before they interdicted. It is possible that the Krowtonans recognized this violation as an abnormal event but were still unwilling to allow the starship entry into their space without contest.

Technology

Knowledge of the exact potency of Krowtonan Guard technology is twenty-eight years out of date. But what little is understood puts their technology at some ten years behind current Federation science- and they may meet or exceed Federation technology in other areas. This makes them a technological powerhouse when compared to the technology of their neighbors- but one not insurmountable. Their technological growth seems to be driven by keeping themselves at or superior to Vidiian technology.

Sensors

Krowntonan Guard sensor systems seem to be one of the few technologies that exceeds Federation Starfleet technology. The Krowtonan Guard is capable of penetrating stealth fields, some forms of holographic cloaks and false transponder signals. Likely, this advancement is based on Vidiian technology and is used as a countermeasure to the Sodality's use of false-front holograms and stealth technology to lay traps and ambushes.

Deflector Shields

Krowtonan Guard shield technology is similar in capacity to Cardassian shield geometry. Their shield damage regeneration window is slightly less than Starfleet capabilities, and they have less ability to rotate shield harmonics to prevent penetration. This indicates that Krowtonan Guard enemies do not commonly deploy tactics to defeat shields, and it is unlikely that the Krowtonan Guard have encountered the Borg Collective.

Ablative Armor

Krowtonan Guard defenses seem to favor armor over sophisticated shields, similar to the Klingon approach to war. Krowtonan Guard ablative armor is equal to and may surpass Federation Starfleet technology. Their armored hulls can quickly polarize and diffuse energy weapons, and have an additional benefit normally applied to shields: Krowtonan ships have an anti-transporter signal skin which, when intact, makes transporting into their vessels very hazardous. Federation military science is curious if this factor may be the reason that Vidiians usually deploy landing pods to board alien vessels.
