Boyajian's Desert- a moniker coined by the [[Starship Ulysses]] crew upon arrival, is a resource-poor "star desert" located 1,468 light-years from Federation space. The desert itself is quite large- similar to crossing the 23rd century United Federation of Planets from its Beta Quadrant to its Alpha Quadrant frontier. The cause of the material depletion and scarcity of the star desert is unknown but probably has multiple contributing factors. If Earth's neighborhood is any indicator, one would expect to see 2-4 stars in a 4x4x4 light-year space. In Boyajian's Desert, that number is dramatically less- approximately one star for every 8x8x8 cube of light-years and even then, these stars seem to be somewhat faint, cool, and slow-burning- most are within the M-type and K-type spectrum. This makes a star near it's center, KIC 8462852, an anomaly- it is an unstable and highly variable F-Type star.
