    END OF BRIEFING

    At a Glance

Star system KIC 8462852 lies 1,406 light-years from the Isonzo star system and is Trailing and Coreward from Federation space with positive z-axis of 314 light-years. That places KIC 8462852 deeply in unexplored Alpha Quadrant space; it is three years of maximum warp travel beyond the most distant explored system to date. At maximum warp, it would take a modern Federation vessel nearly five years to get back to the Federation core.

    Archived History

Yet, KIC 8462852 is somewhat known by Federation scientists- though none have ever been there and its time in the spotlight has long since passed. In the early 21st century, astronomer Tabetha Boyajian, from the Louisiana State University's astrophysics department, used what was known as the Kepler Telescope in what was the standard model of exoplanet discovery at the time- by studying stellar spectroscopy. The star Boyajian discovered sent waves through the media and scientific community at the time. KIC 8462852 had an extremely unusual light frequency variation; it was casually hypothesized by scientists including Boyajian (and capitalized on by science fiction and UFO conspiracy enthusiasts) that star system KIC 8462852 might have an alien megastructure- a theoretical "Dyson Sphere"- or more likely a lesser alien megastructure such as a "Dyson Ring."

No confirmed theory was posited for the cause of the unusual stellar spectroscopy of "Tabby's Star." The most generally accepted theory: KIC 8462852 was a "planet killer" or "moon killer" and was in the process of destroying and dispersing planets. Or, the star itself was emitting unstable stellar weather due to its age. Unfortunately, with the rise of World War III and the destruction of most major world governments and space agencies by 2026, the mystery was never solved and interest in the system waned with actual First Contact with alien life.

    Astrometrics

KIC 8462852 is located off-center of the Boyajian's Desert midpoint but is, for all intents and purposes, at the core of that star desert. KIC 8462852 is immediately notable as an anomaly- it is a variable F-type star in an area of space dominated by a severe lack of resources. Most of Boyajian's Desert, starved of hydrogen, formed M- and K-type stars. The cause for the Boyajian's Star's anomalous existence is currently unknown. It was likely simple luck.
